A Salute to John Glenn: 50 Years of American Manned Space Flight
It has been 50-years since John Glenn made that remarkable space flight. He was the first astronaut to orbit the earth on February 20, 1962. The model was a Mercury spacecraft. The flight lasted around 4 hours and 55 minutes. During the mission there was some concern that a heat shield came loose. This could allow failure to reenter the atmosphere, which, in turn, could also result in the capsule burning up. Flight controllers had Glenn modify his re-entry procedure by keeping his retrorocket over his shield. Glenn managed to reenter safely and it was determined that the indicator was faulty.
Fuck yeah John Glenn. Came to my school when I was a little one. #childhood
